Overview

About this journey

For strong trekkers who want everything the Everest region has, the Three Passes is the one. In a single grand horseshoe you cross Renjo La, Cho La and Kongma La. All over 5,300 m, and collect Gokyo Ri, Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar along the way.

This is a serious undertaking and we treat it that way: conservative acclimatisation, dawn starts on pass days, fixed teahouse bookings and a crew that has crossed these cols in every condition. Come fit, and we will handle the rest.

Trek highlights

  • Cross Renjo La (5,360 m), Cho La (5,420 m) and Kongma La (5,535 m)
  • Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri in one journey
  • The wild, rarely visited Thame and Nangpa valleys
  • Glacier crossings and the biggest views in the Khumbu
  • Small groups only, with extra staff on pass days

Your itinerary

This is our tried-and-tested general plan. After our first chat we fine-tune every day around your dates, group, pace and fitness, and send you a dedicated, real-time itinerary that matches your trip exactly.

Pickup, hotel and a thorough briefing, on this route the gear check matters, so we do it properly.
Warm-up walking beside the Dudh Koshi.
The classic climb to the Sherpa capital.
Everest View Hotel hike and rest.
Into the quiet Bhote Koshi valley, home of famous climbing Sherpas and a lovely gompa.
Short, high and stark, perfect staging for the first pass.
Dawn start, steady climb, and one of the great reveal moments in Nepal: Everest and the turquoise lakes appearing together at the top.
Sunrise summit above the lakes, easy afternoon by the water.
Cross the rubble sea of the Ngozumpa Glacier to the far bank.
The most alpine day: an early climb, a short glacier section (microspikes provided) and a dramatic descent under Cholatse.
An easy link day to rejoin the Base Camp trail.
The pilgrimage: along the Khumbu Glacier to Base Camp itself.
The definitive Everest view, then repositioning for the final pass.
The highest and wildest of the three, finishing in the peaceful Imja Valley beneath Island Peak.
Long descent to forests, monasteries and thick, delicious air.
Rolling trail down the valley you now know well.
Final bridges, farewell dinner, sore legs, huge grins.
Out on the morning flight. You just walked the whole Khumbu.
