About this journey
Manaslu is what the Annapurna Circuit was a generation ago: a deep river gorge climbing into Tibetan-Buddhist highlands, crowned by a serious pass. The 5,106 m Larkya La, with a fraction of the foot traffic.
Because it is a restricted area, you must trek with a registered agency and licensed guide; we handle the special permits and the paperwork entirely. What you get in return is village Nepal at its most authentic, monastery valleys under a vast 8,163 m mountain, and one unforgettable pass morning.

A long adventurous drive up the Budhi Gandaki valley to the warm lowlands.
Hot-spring country: gorges, cascades and the stone-paved entry village of the restricted area.
The gorge tightens spectacularly; bridges criss-cross the river all day.
Climbing steadily, the culture turns Buddhist, chortens, mani walls and the first big peaks.
One of the finest villages in Nepal, its monastery framed dead-centre by Manaslu itself.
Short day into the wide upper valley beneath Manaslu's double summit.
Hike to turquoise Birendra Lake and toward Manaslu Base Camp, or the quieter Pungyen Gompa. Oximeter checks tonight.
A gentle rise to the last village before the pass, a half-day from Tibet.
Short and slow to the pass staging post. Early night. The alarm is unkind tomorrow.
The big one: a dawn start, a long high traverse past frozen lakes, prayer flags at 5,106 m, and a knee-testing descent to the lovely meadow of Bimthang.
Down through pine and rhododendron to join the Annapurna trail at Dharapani.
Jeep out via Besisahar. A long day sweetened by very smug legs.
Transfers to the airport, or straight into your next Nepal plan.
