Do You Need a Guide to Trek in Nepal in 2026?

Short answer: on almost all of Nepal's famous trails, yes, and having guided for years, we would say it even if the law did not.

What the rule actually says

Since April 2023, the Nepal Tourism Board requires foreign trekkers to be accompanied by a licensed guide arranged through a registered trekking company on the major routes. That includes the Everest region, Annapurna, Langtang and more. Restricted areas such as Manaslu and Upper Mustang have required guides and special permits for decades and still do. A small number of routes are exempt, but if you are reading about the classic treks, assume the rule applies to you.

Why the rule exists

Two honest reasons. Safety: most serious incidents in the hills involved solo trekkers. A twisted ankle or altitude sickness with nobody to raise the alarm can turn a small problem into a tragedy. And livelihoods: trekking is the economy of mountain Nepal, and the rule keeps that income with trained, insured local professionals rather than leaving safety to chance.

What a good guide actually does

• Sets a sustainable pace and watches every trekker for early altitude symptoms; ours carry pulse oximeters and check the group nightly above 3,500 m.
• Books teahouses ahead in peak season, so you are never walking an extra hour at dusk hunting for a bed.
• Handles permits, checkpoints, and every small negotiation of trail life.
• Translates the culture: the festivals, the mani walls, why the yak train has right of way (it does, so stand on the uphill side!).
• Becomes, more often than not, the friend you remember the trek by.

What it costs and how to choose

A licensed guide typically runs US$30–40 a day and a porter US$20–25, including their insurance, food and lodging when arranged through a proper agency. Choose a company that pays fairly, insures its crew and limits porter loads. It is the difference between a trek you feel good about and one you do not. It is the entire reason Reet Trails exists.
