Annapurna Base Camp vs Everest Base Camp: Which Trek Is Right for You?

Two iconic base camps, two very different journeys. We guide both every season. Here is the honest comparison we give our own guests.

It is the most common question in our inbox, and there is no wrong answer, only the right answer for you. We guide both routes every season; here is how we lay out the choice.

Time and difficulty

Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m) takes about 8–11 days door to door and stays low enough that serious altitude sickness is uncommon with sensible pacing. Everest Base Camp (5,364 m, with Kala Patthar at 5,545 m) needs 12–14 days and real respect for acclimatisation. Fit first-timers thrive on both, but if you are nervous about altitude or short on leave, ABC is the kinder introduction.

Getting there

EBC begins with the famous Lukla flight, thrilling, but weather-dependent, so you must build in a buffer day. ABC starts with a simple drive from Pokhara: no flights, no buffers, easier on tight schedules and budgets.

The scenery, honestly

Everest gives you scale: the biggest mountain on Earth, the Khumbu Glacier, huge open valleys and that unbeatable name. Annapurna gives you intimacy: you walk into a ring of peaks and sleep surrounded by them, with Annapurna I's south face and the Fishtail hanging directly overhead. Guests cry at both. Genuinely.

Culture and comfort

The Khumbu means Sherpa culture, monasteries like Tengboche, and busy, well-equipped lodges. The Annapurna trail means Gurung villages, terraced farmland, bamboo forest, and hot springs at Jhinu Danda on the way out, which EBC simply cannot match.

Cost and crowds

ABC is meaningfully cheaper (no internal flights) and a touch quieter outside peak weeks. EBC is busier in October and April but carries an atmosphere all its own, base camp during expedition season is a small city of dreams.
