Every trail we guide is beautiful. Langtang is the one that stays with people.
On 25 April 2015, the earthquake that shook all of Nepal triggered a massive avalanche above Langtang Village. The village was lost almost entirely, along with hundreds of residents, guides, porters and trekkers. Walking through today you pass a memorial of mani stones carrying their names; our guides stop here on every departure, and we ask our guests to take a quiet minute. It matters.
The part the headlines never covered: the people of Langtang came back. Families returned within months and rebuilt, teahouses first, then homes, then the trail itself, stone by stone. A decade on, the valley is not a disaster site; it is one of the most alive places in the Himalaya, run almost entirely by local Tamang families whose welcome has to be experienced to be believed. Every bed booked and every dal bhat ordered here goes directly into that recovery. There is no more meaningful place in Nepal to spend a trekking week.
People sometimes assume Langtang is a "cause" trek. Then they arrive. The valley route climbs from monkey-filled jungle along the Bhote Koshi to the glacier amphitheatre of Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m, monastery, bakery, and the best yak cheese in the country, beneath the enormous ice wall of Langtang Lirung (7,227 m). Sunrise from Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri (4,984 m) stands with any viewpoint in Nepal. And unlike the Everest and Annapurna classics, it all starts with a simple drive from Kathmandu: no flights, no buffer days.
Because Langtang gives you everything a great trek should, and lets your holiday quietly do some good at the same time. Namaste, and see you in the valley.
